After meeting with the officers of Local 105 for a week and a half, along with meeting rank&file drivers and Maintenance workers. an open meeting was held in the Union Plaza hotel on December 3, 1998. An earlier open meeting was held on November 28, at Local 105's regular Local meeting place, with a good turnout from all sections of the company. Some lively discussion resulted from that meeting as well.
This was a Drop-In type of meeting, available from 10am until 9pm and people came in all during the day. There weren't more than 20 people present at any one time, but there was plenty of opportunity for discussion of the issues that people were concerned about in this important decision.
Late in the evening one of the most senior KT Services drivers on the "Test Center" runs came in and talked with Tony and Bernie for quite some time. This was a good sign.
At the very end some women KT drivers came in and said that many more drivers would have shown up, but the company produced a list of 40 random drug tests that had to be done that evening. This, coinciding with our open meeting, was a bit too difficult to believe. It appears that Coach USA is willing to violate the FTA random drug testing regulations to prevent their employees from talking to the UTU.
